How to Brew (or Make ) the Perfect Home Made Iced Coffee

By Payne Coffee on

As American’s taste pallets change and become more demanding for better quality tastes, a surge of gourmet products have gained the spotlight. Iced coffee is one of these specialty treats in which the demand keeps rising, especially during the summer time. According to the National Coffee Association, the percentage of Americans who drink iced coffee increased 9% from the year 2003 to 2004. But how does one make iced coffee like the coffee shops? If you have not tried to make it yourself without proper direction, consider yourself lucky, as most people give up because the quality of home made iced coffee is no where near comparable to that of a coffee shop’s. In this article, we will write about three easy methods to use to produce great, coffee shop tasting iced coffee at home.

Important For All Methods It is important that for all the methods listed below that you use dark roasted coffee beans to make your iced coffee. A blend such as a French roast or an espresso roast will work just fine.

Method 1: Cold Brewing The Coffee Using a product like the Toddy cold brew system, one can make iced coffee with no trouble. Toddy recommends the use of one pound of ground coffee and nine cups of water, which will yield six cups of coffee. Simply let the water soak in the coffee grounds for 12 hours, then allow the water to filter. Now you’re all done. The Toddy does produce less acid than using the hot brew methods below. We personally recommend a cold brew system, but if you do not wish to purchase one, continue reading.

Method 2: Hot Brew and Chill The name says it all: hot brew and chill. Simply brew your coffee using your drip machine. When the coffee is done brewing, transfer the coffee from the carafe to a glass pitcher. You will now want to allow the coffee to cool to room temperature. This is to avoid the pitcher cracking in your refrigerator. Once the coffee reaches room temperature, place the pitcher in your refrigerator and allow it to cool down. Once it is chilled, go ahead and serve it!

Method 3: Hot Brew and Coffee Cubes Our final method is to use a hot brew – twice. First, prepare coffee in the same manner as in method two. Do not place the coffee in the refrigerator once the coffee reaches room temperature. Instead, transfer the coffee from the pitcher to an ice cube tray and place this tray in your freezer. When you would like to serve iced coffee, brew a pot of coffee in the amount you wish to serve. Pour the coffee in a glass and add the iced coffee cubes. The cubes will cool the coffee down and not dilute the coffee. Using ice cubes composed of water would dilute the coffee resulting in a weak iced coffee.

Well we hope you’re able to perfect your home made iced coffee skills. Iced coffee is such a great beverage to enjoy while in the hot summer sun!
